Types of sentence structure Used IELTS writing task 1

There are 14 different and frequently asked sentences we commonly use in IELTS task 1.

These are sentences we can usually use in a line graph, bar graph, table, and pie chart.


Sentence 1

Structure :- Subject + verb +adverb + to + graph data + time

For example:- The consumption of Indian food inclined gradually to 35kg per person from 1980 to 1990


Sentence 2

Structure :- Subject + verb + adverb + by + new data (graph latest data - old data) + time

For example :- The consumption of Italian food inclined gradually by 7 kg per person during 1980-2000.


Sentence 3

Structure :- A/An + adjective + noun + of + data difference + was registered/recorded + in +subject + time period.

For example :- A sharp reduction of 20% was recorded in the consumption of foreign food from 1990 to 2000.


Sentence 4

Structure :- There was a + adjective + noun + in + subject + time period.

For example :- There was a considerable incline in the number of visitors between 1998 and 2000.


Sentence 5

Structure :- Subject + had + a/an + adjective + noun + from old data in previous time to new data in new time

For example :- The consumption of Chinese food had a moderate/negligible/substantial growth from 25kg in 1990 to 30kg in 2000.


Sentence 6

Structure :- Subject + remained + almost/relatively + same/stable + time period, which accounted for data

For example :- The GDP of India remained almost stable from 1990 to 2000, which was accounted for 7%.


Sentence 7

Structure :- Subject in place + experienced/witnessed +a slight/rapid fluctuation + time period 

For example :- The production of cars by ford experienced a slight fluctuation throughout the given time period

Structure :- The place + experienced/witnessed + a slight/rapid fluctuation + in subject + time

For example :- The ford company experienced a slight fluctuation in the production of cars from 1992 to 2000.


Sentence 8

Structure :- Subject + reached its peak + in time + at data; thereafter, it kept on declining.

For example :- The intake of fast food reached its peak in 2010 at 30kg; thereafter, it kept on declining


Sentence 9

Structure :- Subject + hit the lowest point + in time + at data; thereafter, it kept on inclining.

For example :- The intake of fast food hit the lowest point in 1993 at 2kg; thereafter, it kept on inclining.


Sentence 10

Structure :- Subject + was comparatively higher/lower + in place 1(data) than in place 2 (data)

For example :- The number of tourists was comparatively higher in India (50000) than in China (20000).


Sentence 11

Structure :- Subject + was data 1, data 2, and data 3 + respectively + in time

For example :- The rate of employment in healthcare, education, and tourist was 20%, 50%, and 28% respectively in 2000.


Sentence 12

Structure :- Subject + place 1 was data in time, it was almost + two/three times as high as the figure of place data

For example :- The per-person consumption of fast food in us was 200kg in 2005, it was almost three times as high as the figure of Japan.


Sentence 13

Structure :-  subject + was + old data in old-time + which/that + verb + adverb + to new data till  +new time

For example :- The price of petrol was rs 45 in 2000 which increased gradually to rs 72 till 2010.


Sentence 14

 Structure :-  Subject + verb +adverb + to + graph data + time, although + there was + some fluctuation + accounted  + in this trend/figure

For example :-  the percentage of people population increased significantly over the period of time, although there was some fluctuation accounted in this trend. 


Types of Examples

without trend

  1. in 1990, the majority of British people ate pizza in their daily lives.
  2. In 1990, approximately 70% of humans were eating pizza in Canada.
  3. in 1990, the highest percentage of people were getting admission to the university.
  4. in 1990, the consumption of energy in the UK was the highest. 
  5. in 1990, precisely 50% of elderly people were unable to do work with their life partner in the USA, which figure was doubled than the UK. 
  6. The population of elderly people in Britain was almost similar to America in 1990. 
  7. After one decade, the figure for eating junk food about 90% by Chinese people reached a peak.
  8. in 2050, it is forecasted that the consumption of energy will highest in the village areas. 

with trend

  1. During 10 years period, the percentage of people in South America increased significantly to 50%, which was doubled in the next five years. 
  2. the consumption of average power was dramatically decreased in South America by 5% between 1995-1996.
  3. A moderate growth was accounted in the consumption of electric city to 7% Asian people from 1993 until 1998.  
  4. There was a slight decline in the number of University students nearly 10% who take a part in sports games.
  5. The number of people using jio sim in Canada, India, China, and Pakistan was 30%, 34%, 90%, and 10% respectively. 
  6. Water shortage between India and China remained almost stable between 1993 to 2003.
  7. The percentage of people eating fast food fluctuated between 1990 and 1999.

complex sentence

  1. There was a dramatic decrease in the number of people taking a shower at the public washroom about 30 million in Australia between 1993 and 1996, although the figure was registered the highest position. 
  2. in 1933, Approximately 30% of students who take a part in classical music in the UK was tripled than European countries. 
  3. The figure for trending music was 30% in 1993, which was inclined slightly after 10 years later about 39%.
  4. in 1993, the highest percentage of people celebrated the new year with their family members. However, a negligible percentage of people loved to enjoy the new year with their friends. 
  5. there was a slight decline in the consumption of food in China by 20% from 1990 to 2000, whereas, people eating Indian food increased significantly by nearly 49%.
  6. The production of paper in South Asia inclined noticeably around 70 million tonnes between 1992 and 1995. (Meanwhile / while), there was a slow decrease in the production of wood in Pakistan.
