How to write a line graph in IELTS writing task 1

Here we discuss a formal way to write an IELTS line graph for Task 1

There are 10 different types of common structures we use in IELTS writing task 1.


For example

The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged over 65 and over between 1949 and 2040 in three different countries. 

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

  • A = the line chart
  • B = percentage
  • C= elderly population aged 65 and above
  • D = three different countries (USA, Sweden, and Japan)
  • E= between 1940 and 2040 (over 100 years period)
  • F = past tense, and future tense

 

The line graph illustrates the percentage of senior citizens, who are older than 65 years and over in three countries, namely the United States, Sweden, and Japan, from 1940 and also gives projection till 2040.

The illustration shows that the average old population in 1940 was between 5 to 10 percent in all the three countries and the USA had the highest percentage of aged people while it was lowest in Japan.  Their elderly people in the USA grew steadily and reached up to 15% in the year 2000. It is estimated to be doubled and reach nearly 25% in 2040. Likewise, in Sweden, the percentage of aged people grew from about 7% in 1940 to 15% in 2000 and is forecasted 25% in 2040.

Paragraph 2

In contrast, Japan’s population aged 65 and over accounted for only 5% of the total Japanese population in 1940. There was a slight decrease in the following 40 years. From 2000, Japan saw an expansion in aged 65 and overpopulation which hit over 25% in 2040, surpassing those of the USA and Sweden in the same year.  


Overall 

Overall, it can be understood from the explanation that in the mention 100 years, all three countries experienced an upward trend in their senior population. However, The increasing patterns are slightly different from one another.
